In the second half of the 19th century, a new city center began to develop southeast of Tallinn’s Old Town. By the end of the century, a market was relocated there, and several buildings that still characterize the area today were constructed. As part of this development, several bank buildings emerged, which over the decades have grown into the heart of Estonia’s financial sector. The most notable buildings in the architecturally diverse quarter of the Bank of Estonia along Estonia Avenue include the former Estonian Nobility Credit Association building (August Reinberg, 1904), the former Revel branch of the Russian State Bank (Aleksander Jaron, 1909), and the main building of the Bank of Estonia. The central bank’s main building, completed in 1935, is in a functionalist style with traditionalist elements. The architects of the building are Eugen Habermann and Herbert Johanson, and the engineer is Ferdinand Adoff. The spacious interiors with minimalist design also adhere to functionalism. The Bank of Estonia was established by the Provisional Government’s decision on February 24, 1919. In addition to the central bank’s main building in Tallinn, branch offices operated in larger cities across Estonia.
