At the end of Vene Street, next to the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, stands a unique horse-shoe-shaped Bremen Tower (also known as Kampferbeck Tower). The name of the tower originates from the former property owner, a merchant named Bremen, and it has no connection to the city of Bremen. Built in the 14th to 15th centuries, this defensive tower is said to have once housed prisoners according to historical records. Currently, the tower is under the administration of the city government.
As you move through its four floors, you will learn about the history of the tower. On the last floor, which historically had a defensive function, you can also enjoy a beautiful view of the Old Town.
The tower’s unique architecture has hindered its use over time – the staircase between the second and third floors has been replaced with a movable ladder, making movement within the tower challenging.
As a result, there is now a unique opportunity to visit the Bremen Tower, as it will be open to the public for only two days during Open House Tallinn 2023.
Meeting point: The entrance of Bremen’s tower.
