Address:Kopli 93, Tallinn
Architects:1937, Elmar Lohk
The community center of social life in Kopli before World War II was the local community house. The building, completed in 1937 according to Elmar Lohk’s design, was constructed on the site of a previous building that had burned down three years earlier. The building is primarily three stories tall and originally consisted of a smaller and a larger multipurpose hall, a foyer, and various auxiliary rooms. The largest hall, with 374 seats, was used as a theater and event hall. In addition to theater performances, it hosted cinema screenings and party evenings. The building, designed in an early functionalist style, is adorned with several artistic details, including a female figure designed by Rudolf Saaring-Sõrmus and ornaments with national motifs. Inside, one could find granite busts of State Elder Konstantin Päts and Minister of Economic Affairs Karl Selter, who supported the construction of the community house. In addition to the community house, the plan was to build a library, sauna, church, and department store along the avenue leading to the main building of Tallinn University of Technology. After the war, the community house was taken over by the military and became known as the Sailors’ Club. Today, the building is under the administration of the Põhja-Tallinn district, requires full renovation, and awaits its future.
