The new school building of MUBA is based on the winning design by Austrian architects and was created through the collaboration of Estonian and Austrian architects, Atelier Thomas Pucher ZT GmbH and Kolm Pluss Üks OÜ.
The architectural idea behind the project is to create a unique and mysterious space within the urban environment. By dispersing the functions of the building along the edges of the plot, a central and unexpected open space is formed – the Garden of Silence. The garden symbolizes the Estonian forest, as if it has naturally grown there. This unexpectedly quiet and peaceful spot provides an opportunity for moments of relaxation and deep contemplation in the heart of the city, surrounded by a vibrant building filled with art, dance, and music.
The building is exceptional in its functional complexity. It’s not just an ordinary school; it simultaneously functions as a concert hall, sports complex, and residence. The school features a multiplex of halls – four concert halls, practice rooms, dance studios, a sound studio complex, a sports center, music classrooms, general education classrooms, and student housing.
While the “Garden of Silence” offers tranquility, the areas around the school building are more active with soft rubber-paved play areas for movement – jogging paths, outdoor gym, climbing and table tennis area, and sports courts.
The façade of the building is composed of aluminum composite panels of varying tones and metal cassettes. Each window of the building is unique, emphasized by surrounding frames that highlight the dance and music happening within and enlivening the urban space. The frames around the windows are finished in black matte silk, with shining silver-golden joints that play with light. The two main entrances are accentuated by golden gates.
