Mustamäe State Gymnasium is Tallinn’s first state gymnasium completed in 2023, providing education for nearly 1080 students. The conceptual design of the building, known as the “Silver Arrow,” was created by the architectural firm Arhitekt Must LLC. The main building is designed as a silver spaceship-like vehicle, seemingly hovering above the first-floor interior and exterior landscape. Silver arrows (historical German racing cars) have symbolized speed and precision while being characterized by their aluminum-like appearance. According to the project’s authors, the silver arrow concept emphasizes the fundamental values of technology, such as speed, sharpness, and precision, which aligns with the technical education focus of the Mustamäe State Gymnasium, established as part of the TalTech University campus.
The structure of the building is based on the surrounding public space – the school courtyards are connected to the campus’s central axis, and through the competition area, diagonal movement from transportation stops to the campus is maintained. The diagonal walkway concept divides the building into two different wings: triangular building wing houses classrooms, an auditorium, a library, and more, while the rectangular building wing accommodates sports facilities. The school building wings are connected by an underground gallery hidden in the ground, which is crossed by an internal pedestrian walkway.
