Address:Plangu tänav 9, Tallinn
Since the 1950s, the elevator of the Tallinn Grain Products Plant has towered over the triangular area between Pärnu Road and Vääna Street in Hiiu. The building, constructed in two parts, had fully mechanized operations—grain brought here from collective farms in the Estonian SSR and elsewhere was cleaned and dried before being further processed. The former building, with a capacity of 11,000 tons, is set to receive a new look and purpose through renovation—its existing structure and volume will be preserved, with commercial spaces planned for the first and top floors, while the remaining floors will house apartments. The top floor will also feature a unique catering and service area. The former industrial zone will transform into a community center. In the next phase, low-rise, three-story residential buildings are planned to be built around the elevator to the north and south. The area is rich with interesting industrial buildings—north of the elevator lies the locomotive roundhouse of the Peter the Great Naval Fortress railway.
