The building known as the Sleeping Beauty’s Castle on Vene Street was commissioned by the English merchant Thomas Greenfield in 1685. After a major fire in the late 19th century, the building was rebuilt in its current Neo-Gothic style. The three-story house is located on both sides of the city wall. The castle-like section on Uus Street borders the Bremeni Tower, with living spaces extending to the upper floors of the tower. The building, typical of Neo-Gothic residences from the turn of the century, is characterized by a free floor plan, terraces, balconies, and projections. The two-story section on Vene Street is made of red bricks, with a strict façade enlivened by low dormers, niches between windows, archways, and a profiled cornice. It started being called Sleeping Beauty’s Castle because, after World War II, the Soviet military took over the building and hid it behind a high fence, where it was covered by vines for half a century. Currently, the city of Tallinn has handed the building over to the Old Town Educational College.
