TalTech Estonian Maritime Academy is a unique competence center in Estonia that offers applied higher education, master’s, and doctoral programs in maritime studies and conducts specialized research in the field.
The school’s history dates back 100 years – on October 27, 1919, the teaching activities of Tallinn Maritime School began, which is considered the predecessor of the Estonian Maritime Academy. In 1991, the Estonian Maritime Education Center was established based on Tallinn Maritime School, Tallinn Maritime College, and Tallinn Vocational School No. 1, which was later renamed the Estonian Maritime Academy in 1999. In 2014, the Estonian Maritime Academy merged with Tallinn University of Technology.
TalTech Estonian Maritime Academy has been located in a historically intriguing place since 2009 – in the former Vene-Balti shipbuilding factory buildings at the tip of the Kopli Peninsula. Established in 1911 as one of the most powerful factories in Tallinn of its time, it was evacuated at the end of World War I. After Estonia’s independence, many small industrial enterprises found their place on the factory’s premises, including the Kopli brick factory, among others. Serving as both a naval and fishing vessel repair base, the factory became the Baltic Ship Repair Factory after Estonia’s regained independence.
