The main building of the historic Volta factory was restored in 2024 and transformed into a residential building with 23 apartments, known as Volta Villa. The new elegant urban homes will continue to carry the building’s heritage — historical elements and valuable architectural features have been preserved both in the exterior and interior. The neo-Renaissance style main facade of the building is characterized by an entrance with columns, a powerful cornice, and decorative details. The interior features restored and exposed historical arched windows with deep reveals, main stone walls, vaulted ceilings, and lace-like rose windows.
The building was completed between 1899 and 1900, along with the first production buildings of the Volta factory, which were equipped with the most modern equipment of the time and produced electric motors and generators. When the Noblessner submarine factory started operating nearby, Volta also produced the electrical equipment for the ships built there. Production continued at Volta during both the first Estonian Republic period and the Soviet era.
Today, the Volta industrial quarter, with its 125-year history, is reviving its historical vitality as a modern 15-minute neighbourhood. The 142,000 m² area, consisting of a total of 29 buildings, will soon form an innovative and environmentally friendly micro-city where homes, work, kindergarten, commerce, services, and entertainment are all within walking distance. Following the principles of sustainable development, the historical buildings of the quarter are being restored, and new energy-efficient constructions are being added. The quarter is planned to include approximately 750 homes and more than 40,000 m² of commercial space, with a 15,000 m² landscaped park area at its heart.
The developer of the quarter is Endover, with architecture created by Apex, ARS and KOKO architects.
